So last week I was cruising along talking on my iPhone when to my surprise there was one of Geneva’s finest behind me with the lights on. Not knowing what I had done, I was surprised to learn that my offense was not your typical moving violation. I had, in fact, been driving with my ear buds in. Now, this fine protector of the innocent did not believe that my iPod-looking contraption was a phone. Plus, he was ready to slap me with a $75 ticket. Ouch. After showing him that what I had was truly a phone (as well as an iPod), he gave me a warning and a stern threat of pulling me over again if I have both buds in. (One is fine, not two.)
With a thank you and have a nice day, off I went. Has anyone else had this happen? Who knew that law anyway? Seems like I need to make a change. What is the best iPhone one ear piece thingy? And what is the best way to talk yourself out of a ticket? Share the love.

I see people driving around with earbuds in all the time. And I don’t think most of them have iPhones, either.
I’m not sure what the best one is (since I don’t have an iPhone yet), but I’ve got a Plantronics ear piece (something like this, though I think there’s a newer model now: http://tinyurl.com/44he3o). You can flip it to use in either ear, which makes me happy. I’d assume it’ll work with an iPhone, since it’s Bluetooth-compatible.
Speaking of phone and driving violations, did you see this? http://news.cnet.com/8301-10784_3-9979488-7.html I’m still trying to figure out how it’s an incentive to NOT get a ticket (aside from points on your license).
How about everyone just writes a $100 check every year to the village that they live in so the police can actually serve and protect? I’d do it just to prevent the hassle of getting pulled over for ridiculous things.

Driving with both earbuds in, or headphones over both ears IS very dangerous. He didn’t know how loud you had them – and if you DO have them loud, you can’t hear any ambient noise around you.. That’s why bluetooth headsets, and even the older wired cell phone headsets only have one ear – so the other is “paying attention.”
