Do you have an iPhone? For any avid cyclists or those interested in hopping on your bike (whether for fun, for your commute, or daily exercise), check out REI’s new app “Bike Your Drive.” This app measures your average speed, maps your route using GPS, and even calculates your carbon offset, calories burned, and money saved in lieu of driving. Along with many other features, we are loving this app so far. Give it a try and let us know what you think!
Even if you don’t have an iphone, check out their website to get extremely practical and helpful tips, videos, and other resources to start biking your drive.
Do any of you already commute to work or store by bike? Any tips for us as we try something new?

I saw this app over the weekend…it was the first thing that actually made me want an iphone…I wish there was a data-only plan. I’m such a bike nerd.
Jenn — this is definitely a cool app. I used it this weekend, and it uploads all the info to everytrail.com, even including elevation, speed, and a map that tracks the whole thing. Everytrail is a pretty cool resource, along with the calculator REI has on their Bike Your Drive site — you could use these w/o the iPhone!
Do you have a road bike? I haven’t quite made it there yet…
If I ever get an iPhone I will definitely check this out.
For those that want to bike to work and are worried about hygiene, here are a few tips:
1. Sweat doesn’t smell, bacteria does. Wear clean, moisture-wicking clothing on your ride in and you wont stink.
2. Arrive about 15 minutes early and sit at your desk in your cycling clothes. Your body will cool down and stop sweating. This will keep the sweat off your work clothes once you change.
3. If you still need to clean up, keep some scent-free baby wipes at your desk. Use them to wipe down quickly before putting on your work clothes. Paper towels and rubbing alcohol work well, too. The alcohol will kill bacteria and evaporate without leaving a scent.
Once you start commuting by bike you wont want to stop. It’s a great way to start/end a day. Thanks Kara!

Curses! That app is pretty cool. I’ve been wanting a GPS bike computer for awhile to more accurately track my miles/routes, and that’s probably a better bet for me than an iPhone with a monthly bill attached…as cool as the iPhone is, I don’t do cell phones.
I ride a commuter/urban bike, as it’s my primary transportation most of the year, and I like to haul a lot of stuff around with me. A true road bike is something I’d like, but probably wouldn’t use as much as my commuter.
Rob, those are some great tips. Thanks for sharing!
uh-EEEE uh-EEEEEE. That’s my geek excited voice.
