There a good portion of people out there that can agree with the fact that their job is mentally active but physically…well… lazy. We get to sit around all day in comfy office chairs and stare at computer screens. Sometimes I don’t even get up to chat with my coworkers; instead, I just roll my chair on over. I decided to put an end to my inner slouch by kicking it to the curb. In order to get moving in the most intense way possible, I accepted the 30 Day Yoga Challenge at the Bikram Yoga Studio in Naperville, IL.
Bikram Yoga isn’t you everyday yoga. It’s a 90-minute, 26-posture series completed in a room with the minimum temperature of 105 degrees and about 40% humidity. Using a tourniquet effect, it stretches, balances (using gravity), and creates pressure all at the same time. The blood supply in arteries and veins is being cut off, creating pressure. When this pressure is released, a lock gate effect is created, causing blood to rush through veins and arteries, flushing them out.
The 30 day challenge, as you might imagine, consists of a daily yoga routine for 30 straight days. 198 people accepted the challenge this past June and 32 completed it. The current challenge started on Sept 21st. Currently I’m on day 9 of 30 and I’m already feeling the benefits. What’s great about this challenge is that every level of student can take part and reap the benefits: it just takes dedication and time. The hardest part is showing up, but it’s completely worth all the time, sweat (lots and lots of sweat), and effort.
I encourage everyone out there to remember to stay active especially as the months get colder and we all get sucked into the great fall TV shows. What’s your plan for staying active during the colder months?

Nice job Katrina! That sounds intense! We’ll be continuing to do our muscle building workouts….I might do a spin class again sometime…those are always fun times.
Thanks Joe! You and Kerri have been crazy with your workouts, it keeps me motivated
Katrina…you inspired me. Joined the gym today! I have big plans for swimming, weights, and group classes.
I attempted one class there a few weeks ago, kicked my butt. Nice work, you’ve inspired me to try it again.
Whoa i never knew the bikram yoga uses a tourniquet technique. That’s insane.
[...] days of bikram yoga, I didn’t think too much of it. 9 days into her 30 day challenge Katrina posted about the benefits of this style of yoga, and I gained a little perspective and education. Inspired [...]
Been there done it and not going back! Since when is a good thing when they tell you “its okay if you become nauseous or dizzy”
