Happy Earth Day!

Posted by in Green 2.9 on April 22nd, 2010

Today, we at Rule29 would like to encourage you to give the Earth a big high-5 or a word of appreciation or maybe even commit a random act of kindness toward the planet you inhabit. Why you ask? Because today is EARTH DAY! The Earth, being a very faithful planet, has once again successfully fulfilled its duties of traveling around the sun & deserves another day of our appreciation.

How can you show the Earth your appreciation?
Great question! The following are 5 ideas to help you do just that!

Get to know your Earth!
You probably already know that the Earth is the third planet from the sun, at a distance of 149.5 million km (92.9 million miles) and has an equatorial diameter of 12,756 km (7,926 mi) with an axis angle of 23.45 degrees. But let me assure you, there is so much more to learn about this great planet.

One way to get to know you Earth better is by taking in the sights, heading over to your local zoo or nature center and learning about environments that are different than your own. Allergies getting to you and feeling like staying in? Check out The Discovery Channel’s Life and see places and things that grace this great planet.

Give your part of Earth a makeover!
Everybody can do something to improve the bit of Earth they inhabit. Whether it be reevaluating energy saving ideas, learning about recycling options for your own place of dwelling, or partnering with neighbors to clean or improve a local eye sore in your community, with a little brain power we all can come up with ways to make our pieces of Earth more appealing to us and the planet.

Buy Earth some flowers (or a shrub, she likes both)!
Pretty much everyone appreciates flowers, and the Earth is no exception. Actually, most forms of greenery are just a delight to good ol’ Mother Earth, and of course we all know the benefits to us as well. Not only do plants liven up drab spaces, but they also provide more oxygen and can improve indoor air quality by removing harmful pollutants from the air. Another added bonus (as if the previous ones weren’t enough) they improve comfort by stabilizing humidity levels.

Plants are exceptionally easy to find. Check out any local florist or even super market to purchase a plant of your own and show mother Earth how much you care.

Help Earth clean house!
It is no mystery, Earth is a recycler and reuses absolutely everything, and if we truly want to be Earth friendly so should we. Throwing things away should be our last option.

Many companies have been doing their best to supply us with responsible products that biodegrade in an effort to make the things we throw away more Earth friendly. And to their credit, this is a great attribute to have. Unfortunately most of these product’s final resting places do not have the components needed to fulfill the break down process. Most of the things we throw away are hauled into landfill that are filled to capacity. These compacted piles of garbage lack the light, oxygen and microorganisms needed for the items within them to break down and are actually left to sit intact for years to come. This is the reason for the landfill problems we currently face.

Do your part to lessen the amount you throw away by reducing what you buy, and recycling or reusing what you do purchase. The Earth will definitely thank you!

Let Earth know you care!
As the weather gets nicer again we return to an old favorite off ours. Leave your car in the garage and try public transportation or biking to work once next week. Easier on the roads (and therefore your taxes), the air, and natural resources. And good for you, too! Who knows, you might actually like the change in scenery.

We’d love to hear how you celebrated your Earth. Leave a comment and let us know!
